Residents’ Rights and Housing Expectations

Each resident of a Joshua Recovery Ministry residence has the following rights:

  1. The right to be treated with consideration and respect for personal dignity, autonomy and privacy.

  2. The right to be informed of available services.

  3. The right to end residency from the program at any time in accordance with policies and procedures described in the resident agreement.

  4. The right to be informed of the reason(s) for terminating participation in the JRM program.

  5. The right to fair housing, to the extent fair housing rights are applicable by law to Joshua Recovery Ministries, which is a faith-based program of recovery, designed for the betterment of the persons living in the recovery home.  The right to fair housing includes the resident’s right to not be discriminated against on the basis of race, ethnicity, age, religion, gender, national origin, sexual orientation, physical or mental disability, developmental disability, genetic information, human immunodeficiency virus status or in any manner prohibited by local, state or federal laws.  Persons entering the Joshua Recovery Ministries program voluntarily commit to participating in all aspects of the faith-based program. JRM does not discriminate on the basis of religion or religious background with respect to entry to the program, so long as the resident agrees that they will cooperate with, and participate in, all aspects of the faith-based recovery program.  If the potential resident does not agree to cooperate with, and participate in, all aspects of the faith-based recovery program, then they are not a good candidate for the JRM program.

  6. The right to be informed of all rights, in a manner the resident understands, and exercise all rights without reprisal.

  7. The right to file a grievance in accordance with policies and procedures.

  8. The right to have oral and/or written instructions concerning the procedure for filing a grievance.

  9. The right to exercise one’s own rights without reprisal, except that no right extends so far as to supersede health and safety considerations.

  10. The right for privacy of communications and personally identifying information within the limitations and requirements for disclosure of resident information under state and federal laws and regulations.

  11. The right to full explanation regarding the loss or restriction of housing privileges, and methods to reinstate the privileges.

  12. The right to be informed in writing of the rates charged by the recovery house, as well as any additional charges.

  13. The right not to be locked out of the recovery house at any time for any reason, assuming continuing program participation.

  14. The right not to be locked in the recovery house at any time for any reason.

  15. The right to consult with an independent treatment specialist or legal counsel at one’s own expense.

  16. The right to privately meet with staff from the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction services and/or the Montgomery County ADAMHS Board.

  17. The right not to be deprived of any legal rights, including landlord tenant rights and fair housing rights solely by the reason of residence in the recovery house.

  18. The right to personal property and possessions, unless prohibited by house policy.

  19. The right to request and receive in a timely manner a written receipt for any payments made or statement of account that details any expenses, charges and payments made.
